the tragedy in benghazi that cost the lives of ambassador chris stevens and three other americans. john kerry, a long-time member of the senate, head of the foreign relations committee, will have no problem winning confirmation of that body. that will reconclude a fight there. that was a fight the president really didn't want to have this early in what will be his second term. so we expect the nomination to come later today. whether or not the president announces it himself we have yet to hear. back to you. jenna: wendell goler, thank you. jon: let's talk about all this with chris wallace. he is of course the anchor of "fox news sunday". maybe the worst-kept secret in washington. everybody expected it was going to be john kerry. what does he bring to this post, chris? >> well he certainly brings experience. he has been a member of the senate a long time. he is chairman as wendell said of the senate foreign relations committee. he seems to have a good working relationship between president obama and his national security team. in fact obama has used him several times as a personal envoy to dea

country areas, you are doing it at your own risk. martha: this fox news alert. the benghazi attack fallout. right now on capitol hill senators are grilling top state department officials following a blistering report that faulted management primarily at the state department for inadequate security at our american consulate and september the 11th. at least one state department staffer has been shown the door. a lot of folks are asking if that is token firing than something with much more far receiving issues. three others we're told could soon follow in terms of heads that may roll at the state department. bring in chief intelligence correspondent catherine herridge live at capitol hill this morning. catherine, what are we expecting in this hearing today? >> reporter: good morning, martha and thank you. really a key piece not addressed in this report is the policy piece, the administration's piece. why was it the obama administration favored light security footprint in benghazi when it was clearly in conflict with the intelligence picture on the ground? there were 20 documented threats or i
her injury to avoid testifying about benghazi gate. you will hear from a former u.n. ambassador after this. >> they testified she has every expectation that she will be testifying. unfortunately as you know she has already stated she will be stepping down. there are pretty good reports that senator kerry who is heading the senate foreign relations committee will be taking her spot. i fear because of the shuffle that is going on we may not be able to hear from secretary clinton on the benghazi terrorist attack. we will be a poor nation for it. >> this is a fox news alert republicans crying foul as secretary hillary clinton suffering from the aftermath of a concussion she will not be testifying about agabenghazi af all. she will be leaving after the appointment of senator john kerry to replace her. the fear of republicans is they will never get to hear secretary clinton's version of the tragic events in libya former ambassador to united nations richard williamson do you, is that accurate ambassador? >> i think that's an over statement. we all have to have sympathy. i think the concern i
benghazi. does this end the debate over that. >> republicans frankly say. no they still have questions about what senator clinton and the president knew about security at the consulate and about the attack and when did they know it. but they made clear in a news conference today that a a susan rice confirmation hearing would have been bitter because of her insistence a week after the attack that it grew out of the protest of anti-islam movie. >> i just did not believe that our country is going to be well-served by people who i, quite frankly, didn't trust. and susan rice, let's just get to the heart of the matter, i don't question her character or prism. i just thought that he was very eager to tell a story that did not make a lot of sense. >> lawmakers say they still want to hear from secretary of state clinton before voting on the kerry confirmation but it's democrats on the committee who will schedule the confirmation date. harris? >> harris: wendell goler outside the white house tonight. thank you very much. we are getting new information tonight about a possible motive for the att
and the meaning of christmas. plus, a change at the state department as the benghazi report is finally released. we will ask our sunday panel about the nomination of john kerry to rehe place hillary clinton and where the investigation of the terror attack that killed four americans goes now. and our power player of the week continues his holiday tradition to show respect for veterans. all right now on "fox news sunday." hello again from fox news in washington. at christmas, people who are naughty get coal in their stockings and at the white house and congress -- if the white house and congress don't make a deal in the next nine days to avoid the fiscal cliff we ring in the new year with big tax increases and spending cuts. here to talk about what is going to happen are two leading senators. john barasso, chairman of the republican policy committee and from new york democrat kent conrad, chairman of the senate budget committee. senators welcome back to "fox news sunday." >> thanks for having me. >> good to be with you. >> chris: before heading to hawaii for christmas the president laid out a new
on the benghazi terror attack on our u.s. consulate there. joining me now, former u.n. ambassador to the united nations, john bolton and a fox news contributor. good to have you with us this afternoon. secretary clinton is still recovering from her illness and of course will prevent her from travelling abroad, but it will allow her to testify next month in an open congressional hearing on the september 11th attack on benghazi. what do you think her testimony will reveal about the events leading up to the attack, during and afterwards? >> of course, it depends on how well the hearings are prepared by members of congress, they need to give up their opening statements, they need to ask questions, not make their own statements. they need to coordinate to divide up responsibility because this is, this is an opportunity that's only going to come once and if they're making their own statements or duplicating their questions we're going to find out a lot less. i think the areas of inquiry fall into three categories, number one, what did the secretary know before the september 11th attacks about request
issues from the fallout over the september 11th terror attacks on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, to growing unrest in the middle east, as well as asia. our peter doocy has been following the story and live from washington. what are the details of the nominee? >> kelly, back in 2004, senator kerry let then state senator barack obama speak at his nomination, and it was a road to the white house. and yesterday at the white house president obama nominated kerry to be secretary of state in his second term. >> in a sense, john's entire life has prepared him for this role. as a son of a foreign service officer, he has a deep respect for the men and women of the the state department, the role they play in advancing our interests and values, the risks that they undertake and the sacrifice that is they make along with their families. >> issues with iran, syria and north korea are the most pressing senator kerry will face if he's confirmed. yesterday, a long time colleague of his, senator john mccain congratulated him on his nomination and will consider that nomination, but he did not prom
the benghazi controversy. what can we expect? susan estrich, a professor of political signs at usc, does it matter that john kerry was not the president's first choice? >> it doesn't matter at all. the issue with kerry from the get-go was not confidential or qualifications, not loyalty to president obama after all. he endorsed him in the primaries, the issue was a guy named scott brown, who is a former republican senators from massachusetts, narrowly lost his race to elizabeth warren and now what we'll have, there will be a temporary appointment and a special election in massachusetts. and, scott brown, notwithstanding my home state is democrat, is leading all the democrats, and the issue with kerry, it would cost a democratic seat, likely in the senate. >> rick: i want to go back to the idea the president badly wanted sutures rice to be the next secretary of state and made no secret about it and she had to go and withdraw her name from consideration. now, assuming john kerry wins confirmation, we'll talk about the process in a minute, does it matter if a secretary kerry is sitting down
got a bunch of questions over the benghazi terror attacks. what do we expect to hear from secretary clinton. joining us is k.t. mcfarland, one takes her at her word when she and spokesperson says she is ill. she has certainly managed to dodge a lot of this event since september 11th. >> yeah, she said she would take full responsibility but she has avoided taking any blame. one thing i think with the hearings, this will probably be the last opportunity as they lawmakers will have to question her as secretary of state. i hope instead of looking back and saying, what did you know, why didn't you talk about the video, i hope instead they focus forward which is why have you not responded. why haven't the responded after these attacks. we know that ten years ago, in the late 1989 and embassies were bombed, 2000, u.s.s. cole was bombed, we beefed up security and changed the rules of engagement but we never went after al-qaeda. what happened as a result, bin laden said, let's go get them again. my concern and i hope these lawmakers and secretary clinton, why has the united states not gotten
, from september 11th the day of the attack in benghazi that resulted in the deaths of four american citizens that we haven't been able to get a straight story or frankly anybody from this administration on the record with a clear explanation not just for the four families but for the american people. megyn: she is going to send some lieutenants. it's not like all testimony has been withdrawn and we are not going to get somebody knowledgeable we presume before capitol hill but it's not the secretary of state. and she said the buck stops with me. so these lawmakers want to hear from her, including senator ker raoefplt he is the one who reportedly said to her don't come, you don't feel well but he wants to hear from her as well over on the senate side. >> and she can still be called. even after she stepped down presumably and senator kerry takes her position she can still be called before the congress and she likely still l. but the problem is that this kind -- here we are almost three months after the september 11th attacks in benghazi. we are still awaiting answers. we still can't ge
